   TOMAH - Gary P. Ewers, age 69, of Tomah, Wisconsin, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at the Tomah VA Medical Center after a long battle with Dementia. He was born June 12, 1951, to Clyde and Harriet (Lein) Ewers in Edgerton, Wisconsin. He was a 1969 graduate of Sparta High School. Following high school, Gary proudly served in the United States Navy from 1969 – 1973.

   Gary married Barbara Johnson on September 29, 1973 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sparta, Wisconsin. Together they moved to Tomah where they raised their children, Kelly and Steve, and began their careers. Gary started at the Tomah VA Hospital in 1973 and worked there until he retired as a Supervisor in the Engineering Department.

   Gary was active in the Tomah community in many capacities throughout his life. He was a staple at the Tomah hockey rink for many years, serving as President of the Tomah Youth Hockey Board, helping with all things related to the rink and cheering on his son, nephews, grandson and their teammates. Gary also was a member of the Tomah Jaycee’s, Habitat for Humanity and was a lifetime member of the Sparta VFW #2112. Gary was a true family man; he loved his family more than anything. He loved traveling with Barb and attending anything and everything their children and grandchildren were involved in. He beamed with pride watching them excel in their activities or sport. Gary will be remembered for his generous nature, sense of humor and his loyalty to his family and many friends.

   He is survived by his wife, Barb of Tomah; his children, Kelly (Bill) Schleusener and Steve (Emily) Ewers, all of Tomah, WI; grandchildren, Noah, Matthew and Luke Schleusener and Madeline, Rachel, Ruby and Henry Ewers; his siblings, Clyde (Linda) Ewers, Keith Ewers, Beverly Walker and Barbara (Al) Baier; his sister-in-law, Cheryl (Bob) Hammer; brothers-in-law, Steve (Kathy) Johnson and Mike Johnson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Harriet; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Kenneth and Dorothy Johnson; brothers-in-law, Larry Walker and Nelvin Johnson; and a niece, Michelle (Walker) Brown.

   A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held Saturday, August 1, 2020, at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Family and friends are invited to “drive thru” and express their condolences from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
