SPARTA – Lola M. Morrison, 107, of Sparta, WI, passed away Monday, February 15, 2021, at Rolling Hills Rehab Center in Sparta.

Lola was born July 20, 1913, to George and Nellie (Bromley) Morrison in Viroqua, WI.  She attended school in La Crosse, WI, and graduated top of her class. She then was awarded a good student grant to attend Teacher’s College in Rice Lake. Her studies were cut short when her father died suddenly and she went home to help with her mom and family.

There was transportation that bussed La Crosse residents to work at Fort McCoy, which Lola did for a while.  She eventually decided it was time to buy a car and learn to drive. Lola was very happy with the $25 “jalopy” that she purchased. Shortly after buying her car she moved her mom and nieces and nephews, who she was caring for, to a farmhouse, on her sister Lucille and Lewis Brockman farm in Sparta. This made her drive to work much easier and she continued worked at Fort McCoy for 42 years.  Lola also worked for many families in the area, cleaning homes, and assisting new moms. She liked to tell people that she “carried a future judge home from the hospital when he was born.”

Lola loved music and played the piano up until her last days of life.  She loved jazzy music with lots of rhythm and she played it all by ear. Her signature song was “how much is that doggy in the window.” She adored dogs!  She took care of many dogs that were dropped off or homeless. Lola worked very hard her whole life and when it came time to have some fun, she loved going to the casino with her family and friends.  The slot machines, the atmosphere and the people she visited with were fun to her.

Lola was satisfied with very little; and what she had, she was willing to offer to someone in need. She was a genuine giver of time, energy, and money. Live your life like Jesus did was the way she carried herself.

Lola is survived by three nieces, Audrey La Fleur of Beloit, WI, Dale Chamberlain of MI, and Bonnie Hull of Sparta; nephew, Lyle Mickschel of Menomonie, WI; along with many great nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Nellie Morrison; and siblings, Ray, Paul, Fred, Kenneth, Ada, and Lucille.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial is being planned in the Leon Cemetery, Leon, WI. The Torkelson Page-Smith Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
