LaVerne Douglas Grandall, township of Portland, passed away April 17 th , 2024, at Journey Home Hospice at the VA, Tomah, WI surrounded by his loving family.

LaVerne was born on March 31, 1947, in La Crosse, WI to Leonard and Bernice (Haiby) Grandall. He was baptized, made his confirmation, and was married (58 years) to Marcia (Padden) Grandall at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sparta, WI. 

LaVerne served in the U.S. Army from 1964-1966 and completed Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He guarded the Berlin Wall and drove tanks. He earned his GED while in the service. After returning from the military, he purchased a milk route. Shortly after, he started the Spur gas station in Bangor. He then worked in Racine at Jacobson Lawn Mower but returned after a short time and began working at Bob Burg Cadillac. He then purchased the Standard station in Portland. He eventually purchased the Citgo station in Cashton and kept it for 6 years. Later he purchased and remodeled the Creamery in Cashton, opening up Grandall’s Service Garage. LaVerne also owned and operated Grandall Trucking and Excavating for over 40 years.

LaVerne was a racing fanatic watching and attending races every chance he got. He started racing in 1966 at the dirt track in West Salem. He also raced at North La Crosse, Black River Falls, Fountain City, Tomah-Sparta, La Crosse Interstate, and Wisconsin Dells Speedways. He also raced snowmobiles earning 3 rd place in the USSA world series. He served as a welder at both the West Salem and Wisconsin Dells racetracks.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia, children, Bryan (Jerolyn), Curt (Angel Ley), Angela (Grandall) Schroeder (Clay). Grandchildren, Bryanna (Grandall) Hoff (Tom), Cole Grandall, Kyra (Grandall) Mack (Nathan), Zoe Grandall (Gabriel), Benjamin Grandall, Alexis Schroeder (Brock), Cody Schroeder and Morgan McCrea. His sister, Karen Althoff (Gary), Bangor, WI. Sister-in-laws, Janet Padden, Seabeck, WA; Karen Rotter, Rochester, WA; Jerry Padden, Seabeck, WA; Allen Alto, Belfair, WA; Robert Alto, Bremerton, WA; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

 

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Shelley Lynn, his parents, mother-in-law Dolores (Padden) Alto and fathers-in-law Forrest Padden and Allan Alto Sr., sister, Marilyn, brothers, Douglas and Richard. Niece and nephew Vicky Rentz and Kevin Grandall, brothers-in-law, James Padden, Seabeck, WA; and Dan Rotter, Rochester, WA. Sister-in-Law, Donna Padden, Seabeck, WA. A Private Family Military Service and Honors Escort was held for LaVerne on Thursday, April 18,2024.
