BEIER COLUMN: Get me out to a ballgame

There was a point in my life where baseball was the only sport I cared about. In fact, I think it was one of a few hobbies I cared about from some point in time that spanned the age range of 8-13 or so. I can remember what it felt like as each professional baseball season neared. I can recall certain feelings or impressions that came with each little Milwaukee Brewers offseason news nugget in the La Crosse Tribune.

SOFTBALL: Cashton routs Riverdale to open 2024 campaign

Coming into a spring where expectations are high, the Cashton softball team naturally wanted to get the year started on a positive note. They had no issues accomplishing that goal right off the bat in a season opener where they finished with a flourish.

After some controversial seeding on Selection Sunday, Colorado State and Boise State head into the First Four looking to show that the Mountain West deserved a little more respect from the tournament selection committee.

West Salem knew it was going to be a tall task to try and limit Pewaukee senior guard Nick Janowski, who is going to play Division I college basketball next season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Add into the mix a teammate who was also on fire from the offensive end for the Pirates? That proved to be a mountain too difficult to climb for the underdog Panthers in their third consecutive state tournament appearance.

Before March Madness gets underway with the First Four on Tuesday and Wednesday and the first round on Thursday and Friday, here’s a quick glance at the 68 teams making up the 2024 NCAA Tournament field.

The most magical time of the year on the sports calendar is upon us once again with the return of March Madness. Here are just a handful of the top storylines to watch in the aftermath of Selection Sunday.

Losing nearly your entire starting lineup to graduation and getting bumped up a division doesn't sound like the recipe for making it to state. The West Salem boys' basketball team? They took on the turnover and changes in stride and barely missed a beat en route to a third straight state tournament appearance.

The Bangor and Cashton girls’ basketball teams will each vie for a regional title and the sectional spots that come with it after winning their home regional semifinal contests to kick off the weekend on Friday, February 23.

A broken arm robbed Bangor senior Samuel Cropp the chance to be part of the Cardinals' revenge win against Cashton in the playoffs. A few months later, Cropp played an instrumental role Bangor's 68-66 road upset of their archrivals.

Tomah's non-conference clash with Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln was about as even as it gets for the first 36 minutes of play. Unfortunately for the Timberwolves, it was the Red Raiders who finally created the decisive separation in overtime to claim the victory.

On a night where they celebrated their seniors and pulled off a late rally in regulation, the Brookwood boys’ basketball team had their hearts ripped out with a gutting overtime loss.

After 37 years of waiting, the Cashton Eagles put themselves in a position where all they needed to do was win their regular-season finale and they'd guarantee themselves no worse than a share of their first conference championship since 1987. The only thing standing in their path was their archrivals and the team that has been the gold standard in the Scenic Bluffs Conference in recent years: the Bangor Cardinals.

One one-hundredth of a second. That tiny fraction of time can seem so insignificant. Think of how many of them passed just reading these past few sentences. But for Tomah junior Elijah Brown, that minuscule moment is all the difference it took to make him a state champion.

At the end of a jampacked day in the sweltering heat, Cashton senior Braylee Hyatt had one final event left in her high school athletics career. One last chance to claim a gold medal on the state track stage with which she became so familiar. With however much Hyatt had left in the tank, she dug deep and made her first-place dream a reality.

Bangor junior Sam Crenshaw's progression in the pole vault throughout his high school track and field career has moved on a steady upward trajectory from year to year. His journey hit a new peak to conclude his junior season with a state championship — but one that still left him with something to shoot for in 2024.
