Afghan evacuees face federal charges

Two Afghan evacuees who were being housed at Ft. McCoy are facing federal charges involving alleged abuse against women.

Bahrullah Noori, 20, is charged with attempting to engage in a sexual act with a minor using force and with three counts of engaging in a sexual act with a minor, with one count alleging the use of force. The alleged victims were younger than 16.

Mohammad Haroon Imaad, 32, is charged with assaulting his spouse on Sept. 7 by strangling and suffocating her.

The crimes are alleged to have happened at Ft. McCoy, making them federal charges.

Both men are being held in the Dane County Jail. They made their initial appearances in federal court on Sept. 16 and are set for arraignment today (Thursday) before U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen L. Crocker.

Noori faces a minimum of 30 years and a maximum of life in federal prison for the use of force charge, and a maximum of 15 years on the other two charges.

Imaad faces a maximum sentence of 10 years.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Fort McCoy Police Department investigated the incidents. Assistant U.S. Attorney Taylor Kraus is prosecuting Noori and Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary Corey is prosecuting Imaad.
