Brookwood girls claim top spot at Royall Early Bird Invitational

Behind a slew of first-place finishes, the Brookwood girls managed to nab the top spot in the final team standings at the 2022 Royall Early Bird Invitational Tuesday, April 12 in Elroy.

The Falcons had a host of stellar performances, including eight total first-place showings on the girls’ side: senior Kimberlee Downing (12:27.27) in the 3,200-meter run; senior McKenzie Woods in the 100-meter hurdles (17.92) and the 300-meter hurdles (53.04); freshman Savannah Brooks (13 feet, 2 inches) in the long jump; junior Cora Brandau in the shot put (31 feet, 1 inch) and the discus throw (93 feet); and the team of senior Lainey Teynor, junior Katie Gruen, senior Margarita Silva and sophomore Amelia Muellenberg in the 4x400-meter relay (4:39.28) and the 4x800-meter relay (10:53.46).

Other top-five finishers in the girls’ running events were Brandau (14.35) in third and senior Sophie Teynor (14.76) in fifth in the 100-meter dash; Woods (29.40) in second, Muellenberg (29.61) in third, Brandau (29.67) in fourth and Lainey Teynor (29.99) in fifth in the 200-meter dash; freshman Savanna Cruz-Groom (1:11.17) in the 400-meter dash; junior Alexis Lacy (2:58.77) in the 800-meter run; Lacy (6:38.97) in second and freshman Alice Wiedmeyer (7:06.91) in third in the 1,600-meter run; Brooks (19.18) in second and freshman Emily O’Rourke (19.99) in fourth in the 100-meter hurdles; and junior Taylor Freed (1:00.50) in third in the 300-meter hurdles.

Other top-five finishers in girls’ field events were Sophie Teynor (4 feet, 4 inches) in third in the high jump; Groom-Cruz (12 feet, 6 inches) in fourth in the long jump; junior Mackenzie Schlafer (28 feet, 1.5 inches) in fourth in the shot put; and Lainey Teynor (70 feet, 9 inches) in fifth in the discus throw.

The team of Brooks, junior Tyana Kaufman, O’Rourke and Sophie Teynor (59.72) placed second in the girls’ 4x100-meter relay as well.

On the boys’ side, the Falcons had five first-place finishers: senior Dan Peterson (54.56) in the 400-meter dash; junior Dylan Powell (2:14.64) in the 800-meter run; freshman Josh Zietlow (48.43) in the 300-meter hurdles; and the team of Peterson, freshman Marshall Doll, sophomore Wyatt Maurhoff and sophomore Owen Radloff in both the 4x400-meter relay (3:53.26) and the 4x800-meter relay (9:30.25).

Other top-five finishers for Brookwood in running events were Doll (24.84) in fourth in the 200-meter dash; Radloff (58.68) in second in the 400-meter dash; sophomore Ethan Dolon (6:49.63) in fourth in the 1,600-meter run; freshman Brayden Thieman (12:14.38) in second in the 3,200-meter run; and Zietlow (21.41) in fourth in the 110-meter hurdles.

Top-five finishers in field events were Maurhoff (33 feet, 9.75 inches) in second and Powell (30 feet, 2.5 inches) in fifth in the triple jump.

In the girls’ team standings, Brookwood accrued 180.5 points to finish well clear of second-place Royall and its 108 points. In the boys’ team standings, the Falcons were second with 89 points to finish behind only New Lisbon and its first-place total of 168 points.
