Cashton football welcomes in Royall with a chance to clinch Scenic Bluffs title

The Cashton football program’s ascendence over the past several years has taken them to heights not seen by the Eagles in quite some time. Another win Thursday night brings them to a place they haven’t been this century.

The Eagles currently boast a perfect 4-0 record in Scenic Bluffs play this season with two conference games remaining. Onalaska Luther’s 20-13 upset win over Bangor last Friday means Cashton is the lone remaining Scenic Bluffs team with an unblemished league record in 2021.

That means that if the Eagles (6-1 overall, 4-0 Scenic Bluffs) take care of business at home against Royall (2-5, 0-5), they will have secured a share of their first conference championship in football since 1998.

That season, the Eagles lost an early contest to Royall, but recovered by playing out the rest of the league schedule unscathed while the Panthers’ big win was quickly forgotten as they dropped two games later that year as they were felled by De Soto at home and Hillsboro on the road.

The Eagles and the Panthers are all set to square off Thursday, October 7 at 7 p.m. in Cashton, where the home crowd will hope to witness history. They’ll have to like their odds with Cashton drawing a Royall team that is still searching for its first conference win on the season after forfeiting the previous two games due to COVID-19 issues within the school district.

Leading the Panthers out of the backfield has been Ethan Palamaruk with 244 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 44 carries, Bryce Gruen with 216 yards and a touchdown on 39 rushes and Savon Wainwright with 185 yards and a touchdown on 33 attempts.

Royall has been unable to find a winning formula in conference play up to this point and will undoubtedly be shaking off some rust. If the Panthers can’t put together far and away their best performance of the season, Cashton will be celebrating a secured share of the Scenic Bluffs crown.

Brookwood at Bangor

The Bangor football team is coming off its first Scenic Bluffs loss since 2013. The Cardinals will look to start a new conference winning streak when they host Brookwood this Friday.

The Cardinals (5-2 overall, 3-1 Scenic Bluffs) welcome in the Falcons (3-4, 1-3) for a Scenic Bluffs matchup Friday, October 8 at 7 p.m. in Bangor.

Mathieu Oesterle and Tanner Jones are the two top backs for Bangor’s formidable rushing attack. Oesterle has accrued 894 yards and 12 touchdowns on 129 carries while Jones sits at 745 yards and 10 touchdowns on 101 rushes. However, Bangor hasn’t had the duo in the backfield together for the majority of the past two weeks.

Meanwhile, Brookwood has three different players who have eclipsed 300 rushing yards so far this year: Austin Frye with 332 yards and three touchdowns on 81 carries, Dan Peterson with 319 yards and four touchdowns on 58 attempts and Franklin Wildes with 311 yards and one touchdown on 62 rushes.
