At 12:52p.m on Monday afternoon, the Sparta Area Fire District was dispatched to the Sparta Family Restaurant, located at 741 Avon Rd. for a fire that started in the kitchen area. Fire spread to the vent coming out of the roof.  When Fire Chief Mike Arnold arrived, there was heavy smoke and active fire over the deep fryer.

A few minutes later, on the scanner, Arnold reported that they have the fire extinguished. Arnold said, “the restaurant sustained moderate fire damage in the kitchen and moderate smoke and water damage in the dining area.”

Arnold said, “the Ansul Fire Suppression system which is required in all restaurants with a fryer and a grill extinguished about 80 percent of the fire, and the Sparta Area Fire District worked mostly on the vent and the roof part of the fire.”

On Thursday morning, Arnold reported the cause of the fire was a grease fire from one of the deep friers. Arnold said, “the building is still very structurally sound and the was no real damage structurally.”

The Sparta Area Fire District Cleared the scene around 3p.m. No injuries were reported.

Chief Mike Arnold said the Fire District was assisted by the Sparta Police Department, Sparta Water Department, Sparta Ambulance Service, Monroe County Sheriff's Department, Xcel Energy and the Monroe County 911 Center.

Agim Saliu, owner of the Sparta Family Restaurant said, “the main thing that got ruined was the hood vent in the kitchen. We have located a new one and have it on the way. We are hoping to be open in the next few days.”
