Area Lions clubs receive donation from Rosco’s Bait Shop in Tomah

Deer hides may look gnarled by the time they are removed and prepared for another use.

A thick deer hide provides warmth. The raw material is used to make many different kinds of leather goods. From a “hair-on” hide that can be used for insulation to scraped rawhide that can be used for cordage and containers, hides are versatile.

For many years the owner of Rosco’s Bait Shop in Tomah, Don Roscovius, and his customers, have contributed deer hides to support the Wisconsin Lions Camp located in Rosholt.

Lions Camp, as it is known to the public, has been in existence since 1956 providing a camping experience to underprivileged individuals at no cost to them.

Funding comes from the public as well as all 48 local Lions Clubs in Lions District D2 in west central Wisconsin. The local Lions clubs of Camp Douglas, Tomah and Warrens donated hides.

These clubs as well as many Lions clubs in Wisconsin maintain deer hide collection boxes for hunters to deposit hides into each fall. In 2020, $87,000 was donated from 18,000 hides collected to support this project. For information regarding the Wisconsin Lions Foundation, visit https://wlf.info/ or call 715-677-4969
