SPARTA - Julie Ann Haas, 71, of Sparta, Wisconsin, passed away May 3, 2023, at home surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer. She was born in La Crosse, WI, to Lloyd and Phyllis Kasten on September 1, 1951. She grew up in South Ridge (La Crescent), Minnesota with her five brothers and three sisters.

Julie married Michael Robert Haas on January 25, 1975, and went on to have five children; Lloyd, Katrina, Lea, Robert, and Henry. They lived on a small farm in Sparta, WI, where you often found Julie tending to her large garden. Because of her upbringing, she was a hard worker and great cook. Fortunately, her daughter, Lea, inherited those cooking skills to help keep some of the childhood recipes alive.

Julie owned and operated Mike’s TV and Appliance, in Sparta, WI, with her husband, Mike, son, Henry, and daughter-in-law, Stephanie. They invested 47 years in growing their successful business and serving the community they loved. They sold their business, and she retired in 2021, and was able to spend a great deal of quality time with her children and grandchildren, who will miss her greatly.

Julie showed her funny, stubborn nature throughout her battle with cancer. She never liked attention drawn to herself or having people dote on her. She often told her family, “I am respectfully ignoring you”.

Julie is survived by her husband, Mike; children, Lloyd (Nicole) Haas of Dakota, MN, Lea Haas of Mosinee, WI, Robert Haas of Kenyon, MN, and Henry (Stephanie) Haas of Sparta, WI; six grandchildren: Braiden Decker and Owen Haas; Huxley and Hans Haas; and Rava and Renzen Veda; brothers: Charlie (Shirley) Kasten, Mike (Cathy) Kasten, Andy (Dawn) Kasten, Pat (Lisa) Kasten; and sister: Sara (Bob) Kappauf.

Julie was preceded in death by daughter, Katrina Haas (2021); brother, Ron Kasten (2021); sisters: Tina and Lorelei Kasten; and parents Lloyd and Phyllis Kasten.

A sincere thank you goes out to the Gundersen hospice team that helped care for Julie and support our family.

In lieu of a traditional memorial service, Julie requested to participate in a “celebration of life” party at the onset of her diagnosis, which took place on April 11, 2021, where she was able to spend time with her family and friends to “celebrate life”.
