LaVerne Thomas Nelson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Tomah Health in Tomah, WI. Born on December 1, 1947, in Sparta, WI, to Thomas and Edith (Biegel) Nelson, LaVerne’s life was a testament to his dedication to family, work, and community.
LaVerne’s journey began in the heart of Wisconsin, where he grew up surrounded by the love and support of his family. He shared a special bond with his siblings, LaVonne, Gary, Jean, Nancy, and Kathy. LaVerne’s youthful days were filled with the joys of small-town life and the values that would guide him throughout his years.
After establishing his roots in Tomah, LaVerne met and married the love of his life, Darlene. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and the joy of raising their two sons, Brian (Chrissy) Nelson and Mike (Kasey) Nelson. LaVerne’s legacy continued to flourish with the birth of his grandchildren, Lacie, Kendall, Karson, and Karter Nelson, who brought immense joy and pride to his life.
LaVerne was a man of many talents and interests, but he was best known as the proud owner and operator of Nelson’s Plumbing & Electric in Tomah. His work was not just a job but a passion, and he was highly respected in his field. LaVerne’s commitment to his craft extended beyond his business as he was actively involved in both the Well Drillers Association and the Plumbing Association.
His love for the outdoors was evident in his time spent trout fishing with his grandchildren all over the Monroe County area, one of his favorite activities to share with them; along with being a lifetime member of the Tomah/Warrens Sportsman Alliance (TWSA), the Tomah Lions Club, and his enthusiasm for shooting sporting clays at Woods & Meadows, rifle/shotgun shooting, and hunting. LaVerne’s competitive spirit shone through in his younger years as he played baseball and softball for Coles Valley and the City of Tomah teams.
One of LaVerne’s greatest pleasures was spending time at the family cabin, a sanctuary where he could spend quality time with family and friends. These moments, filled with the simplicity of nature and the warmth of family, were among his most treasured.
He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene Nelson; two sons, Brian (Chrissy) Nelson, and Mike (Kasey) Nelson; grandchildren, Lacie, Kendall, Karson, and Karter Nelson; brother, Gary (Peggy) Nelson; sisters, Nancy Bremmer and Jean (Tom) Groppoli; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; along with his two sisters, LaVonne Mackin and Kathy Nelson; and nephew, Timmy Nelson.
