What started in a church basement has grown into the Sparta Area Theatre & Arts Guild, giving residents an outlet to express their creativity and love of theatre. Director Kristi Leis and her talented cast members and volunteers help bring productions to life for the community.
Throughout the year, the Guild puts on approximately three to four productions, offering a variety of entertainment. Past productions have included Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dracula, Silent Monks, Always A Bridesmaid, Fairy Tale Misfits, and Bedtime Stories, a kids' production. From suspense and drama to comedy and children's theater, the Guild offers something for everyone.
The organization also hosts acting workshops, giving the community a chance to learn what it takes to put on a play. Whether it's acting, creating the set or working backstage, there is something for everyone.
"I think that it allows people to actually come out of their shell and do things that they probably wouldn't do in their normal life," Leis said.
The theatre currently operates out of the Sparta Eagles Club. Their goal is to eventually have their own building dedicated to the arts.
"We really appreciate the Eagles working with us, giving us a home. They have been wonderful," crew member Toni Anderson said.
The Guild's latest production, A Doublewide, Texas Christmas, is a family-friendly comedy about the residents of a newly established Texas town trying to save their community during the Christmas season.
Performances are scheduled for Oct. 16-18 and Oct. 23-25, with shows at 7:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 pm on Sundays. Tickets are available at the door for $15. Eagles members, military, and seniors can get discounted admission for $10 per ticket, and students and SATAG members can get $5 per ticket.
Community members interested in getting involved can reach out through the Sparta Area Theatre & Arts Guild's Facebook page. The organization is always looking for volunteers, including stagehands and artists to help paint scenery. An official website is also in the works.
With a variety of productions over the years and volunteer opportunities, the Sparta Area Theatre & Arts Guild continues to provide a place for the community to gather for a good laugh or explore their creativity through the arts.
"It's a great time to get away from anything that may be troubling you at that time," crew member Toni Anderson said.
"It's just a nice way to get out and relax," Crew member Donnie Herr said.
