BASEBALL: Riverdale's late onslaught leads to mercy-run win over Cashton

Posted

Despite a stellar day at the plate by Cashton senior third baseman/right fielder Brady Hemmersbach and the Eagles only trailing by three going into the bottom of the sixth, a late rally from Riverdale allowed the Chieftains to quickly turn things into a rout.

Riverdale (1-0) poured on seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to turn its three-run advantage into a 15-5 victory via the mercy rule in six innings in its non-conference clash with Cashton (0-1) on Thursday, March 28 in Muscoda.

Cashton sophomore shortstop/pitcher Drew Butzler's RBI groundout got the scoring started in the top of the first, which Riverdale answered with two runs in both the bottom of the first and third innings. Brady Hemmersbach trimmed that deficit to one with his two-out, two-run single in the top of the fourth.

Riverdale extended its advantage with a run in the bottom of the fourth and a three-run rally in the fifth. Once again coming to the plate with two outs in the top of the sixth, Hemmersbach blasted a two-run home run to right to pull the Eagles to an 8-5 deficit. However, Riverdale's seven-run rally in the bottom of the sixth slammed the door shut on Cashton.

Hemmersbach finished 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, while Butzler and senior center fielder Ethan Klinkner each recorded a hit as well for the Eagles. Riverdale senior pitcher/catcher Logan Kagel went 2 for 4 with a double, a run and four RBIs and junior catcher/pitcher Chase Chitwood was 2 for 3 with two walks and two RBIs.
