SPARTA - Robert E. Bruns, lovingly known as Bob, was born on November 21, 1945, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Dr. Edward and Elizabeth Bruns. He passed away on October 30, 2026, at Gundersen Hospital.

Bob lived life to the fullest and was a passionate advocate of silent sports and an active lifestyle. He enjoyed cycling, swimming, scuba diving, sailing, cross-country skiing, and running. Always up for a challenge, Bob participated in marathons, multiple Tinman competitions, the Birkebeiner ski race, and proudly completed an Ironman competition. His love of the outdoors and his determination to stay active were an important part of who he was.

Bob had an infectious laugh and a wonderful sense of humor that brought joy to those around him. He enjoyed watching YouTube documentaries, but some of his happiest moments were spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also loved being around the grill, smoking his famous ribs and steaks, and, of course, enjoying his bacon. Food, family, and sharing good times were among his favorite things.

Bob graduated from Washington High School in Milwaukee before attending Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), where he studied culinary arts. He continued his education at Michigan State University, completing four years of study in restaurant and hotel food management. During his time at Michigan State, he also played football for one year as a kicker.

Throughout his career, Bob worked in healthcare, serving in hospitals and long-term care facilities. He also worked as a dietary supervisor at Lawrence University and spent many years substitute teaching in the Tomah School District. His varied career reflected his many interests and his willingness to share his knowledge and experience with others.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Randolph. They shared 45 years together, including 20 years of marriage. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Rooney, and her husband, George; nephews, Dr. Stephen Rooney and Sean Rooney; sister-in-law, Barb Bruns; stepdaughter, Cindy Arenz and her husband, Mike; grandchildren, Amy Weninger and her husband, David, and Cade Arenz and his wife, Brooke; and great-grandchildren, Lucas, Leah, Alice, and Esme; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Edward and Elizabeth Bruns, and his brother, Dr. Thomas Bruns.

Bob’s life was defined by adventure, perseverance, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the people and experiences that made life special. Whether competing in an athletic event, sharing a meal fresh off the grill, watching a documentary, or enjoying time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Bob found joy in the simple pleasures and challenges of life.

He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, determination, treasured memories, and love that will live on through his family and all those fortunate enough to have known him.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

In keeping with Bob’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service.  Any memorials in Bob’s name can be sent St Jude’s children’s hospital or The Black River Falls State Forest Candlelight Ski Association. Online condolences may be offered at www.schanhoferfh.com.
